Workshop 5: Interdisciplinary oncology throughout the patient pathway

November 23-25, 2026

Location: ZMF Conference Room (ground floor)

Day 1 : Monday, 23 November

TimeProgram
13:30 – 14:00Brief introduction to afternoon clinical sessions
14:00 – 15:00Introduction to the Biobank Graz and tour of facility
Meeting location: ZWT I Seminar Room
15:30 – 16:30The molecular diagnostic portfolio and the Molecular Tumor Board
Division of Oncology — Leo Edlinger
– What is available beyond the diagnostics performed at first diagnosis, and which patients are candidates.
– The Molecular Tumor Board: mandate, referral criteria, and how a case moves through it.

Selected cases: which diagnostics were ordered, how the results were assessed, and how a recommendation is reached when the evidence base is limited.

Day 2 : Tuesday, 24 November

TimeProgram
13:45 – 14:30Precision oncology in clinical practice
Division of Oncology — Prof. Philipp Jost
14:45 – 16:00Digital pathology in Graz: hands-on session and scanning facility visit
Diagnostic and Research Institute of Pathology — Markus Plass

– The slide scanning infrastructure, and how digitized slides move through the routine diagnostic workflow.
– Working at the viewing stations with scanned cases from earlier in the afternoon.
– Image analysis and AI-supported diagnostic tools currently in use and in development.
– Walk-through of the scanning facility.

Day 3 : Wednesday, 25 November

TimeProgram
13:30 – 14:15Liquid biopsy in clinical practice
Division of Oncology — Samantha Hasenleithner

– When a blood-based test is ordered instead of, or in addition to, tissue.
– ESR1 testing as a worked example: the clinical question, the timing of the test, and the treatment decision that follows.
– Practical aspects from the ordering clinician’s side: turnaround time, reimbursement, and how to read a negative result.
– Where the evidence supports routine use, and where it does not.
14:25 – 15:45From “bedside-to bench-and back”
Closing roundtable and evaluation
Division of Oncology — Michael Dengler
